The Civilian Climate Corps Is ‘Pure Socialist Wish-Fulfillment’
At A Time Of Near-Record Job Openings, Democrats Are Determined To Funnel Taxpayer Dollars To A Civilian Climate Corps, A Dressed-Up New Deal Retread, In Essence ‘A Made-Up Government Work Program’ That Nobody Needs
SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER MITCH McCONNELL (R-KY): “Democrats also want to pour billions of dollars into a made-up government work program they’re calling the ‘Civilian Climate Corps.’ This is pure socialist wish-fulfillment. We’ve already got a worker shortage and record numbers of open jobs, but Democrats want taxpayers to put aside $8 billion for make-work programs for young liberal activists that they admit ‘[wouldn’t] measurably reduce emissions.’ And under their latest batch of proposed regulations, states that fail to keep pace with heavy-handed emissions targets would face ‘consequences’ — like freezes on funds for major transportation projects that employ lots of American workers. They want to bully every state to become more and more like California.” (Sen. McConnell, Remarks, 10/27/2021)
SENATE REPUBLICAN WHIP JOHN THUNE (R-SD): “Now, with inflation clearly becoming a long-term problem, Democrats are preparing to double down on the government spending with a massive [multi]trillion tax-and-spending bill filled with priorities like $200 million for a park in Speaker Pelosi's district—a park that features luxury housing and a golf course—and billions of dollars for a Civilian Climate Corps to provide government jobs for climate activists.” (Sen. Thune, Congressional Record, S.7097, 10/20/2021)
SEN. JOHN BARRASSO (R-WY): “[T]his is spending on top of the $6 trillion already spent in coronavirus relief. Plus, it is loaded with liberal policies … It also includes a Civilian Climate Corps. They want to hire a million people who would, many, be protesters against things like the Keystone XL pipeline.” (Fox News, 8/01/2021)
SEN. JAMES LANKFORD (R-OK): “[Democrats would spend] billion[s] for the Civilian Climate Corps to be able to pay young people to do climate activism all around the country, so those folks that are climate activists will actually be paid for with your tax dollars.” (Sen. Lankford, Congressional Record, S.6829, 9/30/2021)
Democrats Plan To Direct Some Of The $555 Billion In Taxpayer Money Bloating Their Massive Spending Bill To Create An FDR-Style ‘Civilian Climate Corps’
“A NEW CIVILIAN CLIMATE CORPS has become a central progressive demand for the Democrats’ budget reconciliation package, and party leaders seem poised to go along. Climate groups and elected officials alike see it as a combination of several top priorities: a tangible response to climate change, a broad-based jobs program aimed especially at young people and people of color, and a test case for Franklin Delano Roosevelt-style populism that President Biden is so eagerly trying to emulate.” (“Democrats Unify Behind Climate Corps, Vague on Details,” The Wall Street Journal, 7/23/2021)
- “The White House said the $555 billion for climate-related provisions is the largest such investment in history…. The package also sets aside an unspecified amount of money for a Civilian Climate Corps, with the aim of hiring 300,000 workers …” (“Biden’s Spending Bill Includes $555 Billion for Climate Measures,” The Wall Street Journal, 10/28/2021)
Democrats Are Pushing Their Make-Work Climate Corps At A Time When The U.S. Has Over 10 Million Job Openings As ‘Businesses Are Struggling To Find Employees’
“Job openings, a measure of labor demand, jumped 749,000 to 10.9 million on the last day of July, the highest level since the series began in December 2000. It was the fifth straight month that job openings, which have been increasing since January, hit a record high.” (“U.S. Job Openings Hit Record High As Employers Struggle To Find Workers,” Reuters, 9/08/2021)
- “The number of open jobs actually fell somewhat in August, to 10.4 million from a record 11.1 million in July … But the slowdown did little to ease the hiring logjam: There were more open jobs than unemployed workers in August…. [H]iring difficulties [also continued]: The labor force shrank in September, as higher wages failed to draw people back to work.” (“Workers Quitting Their Jobs Hit A Record In The U.S. In August.,” The New York Times, 10/12/2021)
“As the economy struggles to get back on track amid the pandemic, businesses are struggling to find employees …” (“Workers Quitting Their Jobs Hit A Record In The U.S. In August.,” The New York Times, 10/12/2021)
- “America's tight labor market continues to face a staggering disconnect between the number of jobs available and the number of people out of work. Even as managers across the board are looking for workers, the number of hires stood at just 6.7 million in July.” (“Job Openings Rose To Yet Another Record High In July,” CNN Business, 9/08/2021)
‘Democrats Envision A Corps That’s Part Green-Jobs Program, Part Behavioral Hectoring Squad, Part Social-Justice Brigade, And Part Union-Recruitment Effort’
THE WALL STREET JOURNAL EDITORIAL BOARD: “As the U.S. recovers from a pandemic, with workers in services and manufacturing in short supply across the economy, here’s what no one sensible thinks America urgently needs: a huge new federal Civilian Climate Corps. Yet that’s exactly what Democrats want to create as part of their plan to expand government into every corner of American life. It isn’t enough to lecture Americans about the supposed perils of climate change. Now they also want to tax you and other Americans to pay your children to spend years lecturing you.” (Editorial, “A New National Climate Army,” The Wall Street Journal, 7/26/2021)
- “Like so many other ideas in this Administration, the idea comes from the Democratic left, specifically the Sunrise Movement and Evergreen Action. Their idea was adopted by New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, who have proposed a Climate Corps that employs 1.5 million Americans over five years. The precedent is FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps, which paid Americans to work when the jobless rate was more than 20% in the Depression.” (Editorial, “A New National Climate Army,” The Wall Street Journal, 7/26/2021)
- “The White House says the Climate Corps would ‘put a new, diverse generation of Americans to work conserving our public lands and waters, bolstering community resilience, and advancing environmental justice.’ Democrats envision a Corps that’s part green-jobs program, part behavioral hectoring squad, part social-justice brigade, and part union-recruitment effort.” (Editorial, “A New National Climate Army,” The Wall Street Journal, 7/26/2021)
And Even Advocates Admit The Scheme Will Do Little To Nothing About Climate Change: ‘It Just Doesn’t Measurably Reduce Emissions’
SEN. SHELDON WHITEHOUSE (D-RI): “To be clear, I support a Civilian Climate Corps. It just doesn’t measurably reduce emissions.” (“Dems Fear Chopping Block For EJ, Lead Pipes, Climate Corps,” E&E Daily, 10/06/2021)
