Republicans Won’t Let Democrat Distractions Get in the Way of Solutions for the American People

While Republicans Take Action on the Issues Important to the American People, Democrats Try to Delay, Distract, and Demonize

“This resolution is the first step toward a final bill to make permanent the tax relief we implemented in 2017 and deliver a transformational investment in our border, national, and energy security – all accompanied by substantial savings measures and commonsense reforms to our government.” – Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.)

“I suspect Senate Democrats will fight these common-sense policies. Well, I’ve got news for my colleagues. Democrats lost at the ballot box in November. Republicans won then – and we will win now. Our win is not about us. It is about the American people. The American people gave us a mission and a mandate: secure borders, lower taxes, affordable energy, peace through strength, and, of course, efficient, effective government. Senate Republicans’ bold budget blueprint delivers.” – Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R-Wyo.)

A NIGHT OF DEMOCRAT DEMAGOGUERY AND DISTRACTION

  • “The Senate kicked off a marathon vote series on Friday night, which Republicans need to get through in order to approve their changes to the House's plan for President Donald Trump's budget.” (Fox News: Senate kicks off all-night 'vote-a-rama' as Democrats plan to press GOP on Trump, DOGE – 4/4/25)
  • “After caving in the government funding fight last month, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is under increased pressure to force votes well into the night on amendments…” (Politico: Senate GOP begins ‘vote-a-rama’ do-over to launch Trump’s party-line package – 4/4/25)
  • “Democrats sought to make the task as difficult as possible by consuming hours of floor time to criticize the budget resolution and by filing hundreds of messaging amendments designed to score political points against the Trump administration.” (Roll Call: Senate begins long night of budget votes – 4/4/25)
  • Democrats spent a great deal of time demagoguing billionaires, despite the fact that “the bottom 50% of Americans saw their average federal tax rate fall by 15% from 2017 to 2018, after the Trump tax cut took effect, according to the Tax Foundation… By contrast, the top 1% saw their average rate decline by a lesser percentage (about 5%) during that period, to 25.4% from 26.8%.” (CNBC: ‘Reverse Robin Hood scam’ or windfall for middle class? Lawmakers debate Trump tax plan extensions – 3/3/25)
  • Schumer outlined his plan of attack earlier Friday on the Senate floor, calling the new Senate budget a “poison” plan to benefit “super rich, super greedy billionaires.” (Politico: Senate GOP begins ‘vote-a-rama’ do-over to launch Trump’s party-line package – 4/4/25)
  • “The way to restore fiscal sanity isn’t to tax hardworking Americans more—it’s to spend less. The Senate budget resolution unlocks our ability to make the Trump tax cuts permanent and deliver relief to hardworking American families.” – Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo (R-Idaho)

DEMOCRATS FEARMONGER OVER MYTHICAL SOCIAL SECURITY CUTS

“Even by Washington standards, the Senate Democrats are currently setting a new low for political prevarication: claiming Social Security will be cut. They know that is not true. [President Trump] has said as much, and the rules of budget reconciliation disallow it. Shameful.” – Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas)

  • Democrats continue to accuse Republicans of planning to cut Social Security in reconciliation. There are only two problems: Republicans are on the record saying that the program is off the table, and Social Security isn’t eligible for consideration in the reconciliation process.
  • “Social Security won’t be touched… other than if there’s fraud or something — we’re going to find it; it’s going to be strengthened — but won’t be touched.” – President Donald Trump
  • “Similarly, Speaker Mike Johnson has said Republican lawmakers have no plans to make changes to Social Security in a forthcoming budget bill even if they were allowed to reform the entitlement program in budget reconciliation.” (The Daily Caller: Senate Dem Doubles Down Attacking GOP Budget For Something His Own Party Says Can’t Happen – 4/2/25)
  • Nevertheless, “Democrats have filed 20+ amendments related to Social Security…” (Axios: Senate Dems to target vulnerable Republicans in overnight voting marathon – 4/4/25)
  • Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.) “suggested Tuesday that Republican lawmakers are working to slash Social Security benefits in the sweeping tax and spending bill Congress is currently negotiating.” (The Daily Caller: Senate Dem Doubles Down Attacking GOP Budget For Something His Own Party Says Can’t Happen – 4/2/25)
  • Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said that, for Republicans “to make their tax rate goals, there will be cuts to Social Security benefits…” (C-SPAN: U.S. Senate – 4/4/25)
  • Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) accused Republicans of, “trying to wreck the administration and operations of Social Security.” (C-SPAN: U.S. Senate – 4/4/25)
    • Democrats’ claims of “potential cuts to Social Security [are] directly contradicted by fellow Democrat Boyle, who acknowledged in January that lawmakers cannot cut Social Security in a forthcoming budget bill. ‘Other special rules, which are designed to protect the rights of the minority party, apply to reconciliation bills,’ Boyle said in a ‘budget reconciliation explainer’ from Jan. 10. ‘For example, the Social Security program cannot be changed in reconciliation.’” (The Daily Caller: Senate Dem Doubles Down Attacking GOP Budget For Something His Own Party Says Can’t Happen – 4/2/25)

FOR ALL THEIR MESSAGING AMENDMENTS, DEMOCRATS ARE STILL AFRAID TO TALK ABOUT BORDER SECURITY AND IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT

  • Flashback to when the Senate considered Republicans’ budget resolution in February: “Though Senate Democrats attempted to put their Republican colleagues on the spot by holding votes on dozens of amendments intended to exact political pain, Democrats had little to say about the actual purpose of the budget resolution: funding the president’s border security agenda.” (The Daily Caller: Senate GOP Blocks Dem Effort To Make Immigration Enforcement Package About Anything Other Than Border Security – 2/21/25)
