President Biden Is Dangerously Out Of Touch With Americans’ Priorities

As Poll After Poll Shows Americans Struggling With Inflation, Concerned About Their Economic Futures, And Looking For Leadership From Washington, Democrats Continue To Obsess Over The Pet Issues Of Left-Wing Activists

SENATE REPUBLICAN LEADER MITCH McCONNELL (R-KY): “With a cascade of major crises testing our country, Senate Democrats are prioritizing a show vote on mandating nine months of abortion on demand across America. Senate Democrats want to go on the record supporting the radical and massively unpopular proposition that we should have functionally no restrictions on abortion whatsoever. Democrats already have the United States one of just seven nations in the entire world that allow elective abortions after 20 weeks. This radical fringe policy places us in company such as China and North Korea. But now Senate Democrats want to go even further than Chairman Xi and Kim Jong-Un. 91% of Americans support some restrictions on abortion during the third trimester. The public overwhelmingly disagrees with Democrats’ extreme obsession on this issue. But yet again, our colleagues wish to demonstrate that the radical left fringe runs today’s Democratic Party. As the world prays for Ukraine and debates consequences for Putin… as American families contend with violent crime, open borders, and runaway inflation… Washington Democrats want to spend their time arguing for unlimited abortion on demand. I want to thank the Majority Leader for making it so clear where his party’s priorities lie.” (Sen. McConnell, Remarks, 2/28/2022)

When Americans Are Asked About The Most Important Problem Facing The Country, Most People Consistently Point To Inflation And The Economy

GALLUP POLL: “The economy was the much greater concern of Americans in early February, with 30% mentioning at least one economic problem, such as inflation or the economy in general. This was up from 22% combined economic mentions in January and, along with December’s 29% reading, is the highest percentage citing economic concerns over the past year. Problems with government and leadership continue to be a prominent concern, mentioned by 20%.” (“U.S. Satisfaction Low as Economic Concerns Remain High,” Gallup, 3/01/2022)

EMERSON COLLEGE POLL: “Inflation is seen as the most important issue facing the country among a plurality (24%) of voters. Covid-19 follows with 20%, closely followed by healthcare with 16%, and immigration with 11%. Education and jobs were the top issue for 6% of voters, respectively, and taxes and foreign affairs with 3% apiece. Twelve percent (12%) report ‘something else;’ and when these voters specified their top issue, the most common responses included climate change, crime, and income inequality.” (“February 2022 National Poll: Inflation Tops Nation’s Concerns, Perception of Covid’s Public Health Threat Drops,” Emerson College Polling, 2/2022)

NPR/PBS NEWSHOUR/MARIST POLL: “Topping Americans’ concerns in the survey is inflation, as 38% said they think it should be Biden’s top priority.” (“A Majority Says Biden’s First Year Was A Failure, A New Poll Finds,” NPR, 2/25/2022)

“The [Fox News] poll, released Thursday, finds 22% say inflation is the most important issue facing the country and another 16% prioritize jobs and economic growth.” (“Fox News Poll: Voters Say The State Of The Union Is Worse Than A Year Ago,” Fox News, 2/24/2022)

But Very Few People Consider The Issues Democrats Are Focused On To Be The Most Important Ones Facing The Country

In the February Gallup poll asking Americans about the most important problem facing the country today, only 2% of respondents pointed to climate change or the environment. (“U.S. Satisfaction Low as Economic Concerns Remain High,” Gallup, 3/01/2022)

In a January Gallup poll asking Americans about the most important problem facing the country today, only 1% of respondents said election reform. (“Most Important Problem,” Gallup, Accessed 2/28/2022)

Yet President Biden And Democrats Keep Turning Congress Towards These Fringe Issues Instead Of The Top Concerns Of Americans

Radical Abortion-On-Demand Legislation

“The Senate voted 46-48 Monday to block a bill pushed by Democrats to codify abortion rights into federal law … The legislation, the Women’s Health Protection Act, failed to garner the needed 60 votes to overcome a filibuster and would have fallen short of the 50 votes needed for passage …” (“Senate Rejects Democratic Bill To Codify Abortion Rights,” NBC News, 2/28/2022)

SENATE MAJORITY LEADER CHUCK SCHUMER (D-NY): “[T]he Senate today is going to take action because abortion has never been more at risk in America. Indeed, this will be the first time the Senate takes a vote on a stand-alone bill to proactively codify Roe. Let me say that again – this will be the first time that the Senate takes a vote on a stand-alone bill to proactively codify Roe.” (Sen. Schumer, Remarks, 2/28/2022)

A Partisan Takeover Of American Elections

“Biden plans this year to repackage past proposals in search of achievable measures he hopes can win bipartisan support in a bitterly divided Congress before the elections… Biden also was to appeal for action on voting rights, gun control and police reform, which have failed to win significant Republican backing.” (“Biden Steps To State Of The Union Lectern At Fraught Moment,” The Associated Press, 3/01/2022)

SCHUMER: “Well, we are working -- there are constant meetings and not just among a few senators but just about every senator. Every single one of the 50 is talking individually to Joe Manchin and to Kyrsten Sinema. And they’re saying things like I’ll lose my election if the legislature is allowed to do this in my state. We’ll lose our majority…” (MSNBC, 1/12/2022)

HOUSE SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI (D-CA): “[W]e remain hard at work to help to pass BBB as well as voting rights.” (Speaker Pelosi, Press Conference, 2/28/2022)

AL SHARPTON: “Now that voting rights legislation seems stalled, what are Democrats doing to try and combat this, Senator?”
SEN. ALEX PADILLA (D-CA): “Short term, we’ve got to keep pressing the case, the urgent need for voting rights protection across has not gone away, and the conversations do continue in the Senate and in Congress.” (MSNBC, 2/05/2022)

Green New Deal Spending Boondoggles

“President Joe Biden will call on Congress to revive stalled climate legislation in Tuesday’s State of the Union address, pitching a package of tax credits and climate spending as a way to battle inflation... The renewed push comes as Biden’s approval ratings have dropped precipitously, with voters increasingly frustrated by soaring inflation, driven in part by higher energy prices. Biden is not expected to explicitly lay out an alternative legislative vision, according a senior administration official who requested anonymity to discuss the preparations. Instead, he’ll describe fighting climate change as integral to boosting middle class finances.” (“Biden State of the Union to Cast Climate Bill as Anti-Inflation,” Bloomberg, 2/28/2022)

‘Dark Money’

“[White House Chief of Staff Ron] Klain laid out for the senators what they can expect to hear from Biden’s State of the Union speech -- and promised there would be some ‘good surprises’ in his remarks. One thing Klain said Biden is planning to discuss in his speech was the issue of dark money, per one senator.” (“All Members Of Congress Will Be Invited To Attend The State Of The Union In Person,” CNN, 2/17/2022)

And Of Course, Democrats Are Also Laser-Focused On Postal Reform

SCHUMER: “[W]e’re picking up right where we left off to pass Postal Reform so we can send it to the President’s desk.” (Sen. Schumer, Remarks, 2/17/2022)

  • “The U.S. Postal Service would get a $50 billion boost under a bill aimed for the Senate floor… which supporters like Sen. Chuck Schumer say is critical to revive the ailing institution…. ‘The post office is one of the most important institutions and most hallowed institutions in American life,’ Schumer, the Senate majority leader, said in Manhattan on [February 13th].” (“N.Y. Sen. Schumer Pushes $50B Overhaul Of Postal Service,” New York Daily News, 2/13/2022)
