Every Person Is Endowed With The Right To Life

Will The U.S. Continue To Be One Of Only Seven Nations That Allow Post 20-Week Abortions?

MAJORITY LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL (R-KY): “In my travels I often hear about the many ways that Washington fails to stand up and fight for worthy causes. Among the most notable is the fight to protect innocent life. That's why last summer I said that a new Republican majority would prioritize legislation that aims to protect unborn children after 20 weeks in the womb, and that's why I will be proud to vote for it this coming week.” (“McConnell: Vote Coming To Protect Unborn,” Cincinnati Enquirer, 9/20/15)

  • “The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act would allow America to join the ranks of most other civilized nations in the world by protecting unborn children after 20 weeks in the womb. The House has already passed this sensible legislation. This legislation has been proposed in the U.S. Senate before, but it was never brought up for consideration when Senate Democrats were in the majority. Fortunately, due to the voice of the American people last November, the Senate is under new management.” (“McConnell: Vote Coming To Protect Unborn,” Cincinnati Enquirer, 9/20/15)

Along With North Korea, U.S. One Of Only Seven Countries To Allow Post 20 Week Abortions

SEN. JAMES LANKFORD (R-OK): “Maybe we need to start again as a nation asking a basic question: Is that a child? In our Declaration, we said every person, we believe, is endowed by our Creator to life, liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Maybe we need to ask again as a nation, do we really believe that?  There are only seven countries in the world that allow that. We are in a prime group—like North Korea and China—of nations which still allow abortions that late. We should ask that question again: Is that really who we are as America?” (Sen. Lankford, Congressional Record, S.5155, 7/16/15)

POLITIFACT: “The Family Foundation says, ‘The United States is one of only seven nations that allows elective abortions after 20 weeks post-fertilization.’ Separate research by pro- and anti-abortion rights groups back up claim. We won’t quibble over whether Australia should be added to the group of seven. We find the statement True.” (“Family Foundation Says U.S. Among Seven Nations That Allows Elective Abortions After 20 Weeks,” Politifact, 5/26/15)

  • “The Family Foundation pointed us to a report on global abortion laws published in February 2014 by the Charlotte Lozier Institute, the research arm of the Susan B. Anthony List, an organization dedicated to ending abortion. It concluded that only seven of 198 nations and territories allow elective abortions after 20 weeks: Canada, China, Netherlands, North Korea, Singapore, United States and Vietnam. We came up with the same seven countries after sifting through 2014 data published by the Center for Reproductive Rights, a worldwide pro-abortion group.” (“Family Foundation Says U.S. Among Seven Nations That Allows Elective Abortions After 20 Weeks,” Politifact, 5/26/15)

‘Americans Generally Are Opposed To Abortions After 20 Weeks Of Pregnancy,’ ‘Women Are Broadly Supportive’

QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY POLL: 60% of Americans support “legislation that would ban virtually all abortions nationwide after 20 weeks of pregnancy.” (The Quinnipiac University Poll, 1,623 RV, MoE 2.4%, 11/18-11/23/14)

YOUGOV POLL: 58% of Americans would favor “a federal law that would ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, except in cases of rape or incest.” (YouGov Poll, 1000 A, MoE 6/27-6/28/13)

“In fact, of four major polls conducted in recent weeks on the 20-week abortion ban, each one shows women are actually more supportive of the law than men.” (“Guess Who Likes The GOP’s 20-Week Abortion Ban? Women.,” Washington Post, 8/2/13)

“Americans generally are opposed to abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. A 2013 Washington Post-ABC News poll found 56 percent of voters preferred limiting unrestricted abortion rights to 20 weeks rather than 24 weeks.  A 2012 Gallup poll found… support dropped to 27 percent in the second trimester and 14 percent in the third trimester.” (“Planned Parenthood’s Claim That ’60 Percent’ Of Voters Oppose 20-Week Abortion Ban,” Washington Post, 6/18/15)
