McConnell Statement On The Passing Of Senator Joe Lieberman
LOUISVILLE, KY. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following statement on the passing of former Senator Joe Lieberman:
“Elaine and I were saddened to learn of the passing of a good friend and former colleague, Senator Joe Lieberman.
“Joe’s life was adorned with the marks of the American Dream. From working class roots, the first member of his family to attend college made history as the first Jewish candidate on a major party presidential ticket.
“But the legacy of one of the Nutmeg State’s most prolific national leaders will be defined not by his personal accomplishments but by the aspirations to which he called his fellow Americans. Joe was guided by devout faith, but lived in public with a moral conviction that rallied different viewpoints behind our nation’s most essential goodness. He spent his career in the political arena, but never let the demands of his party supersede his country’s calling.
“I especially admire the way Joe asserted such a clear-eyed vision of America’s role in the world and an unapologetic commitment to the responsibilities of American leadership.
“Today, I join the entire Senate in offering sincere condolences to Senator Lieberman’s wife, Hadassah, his children and grandchildren, and the entire Lieberman family as they mourn a distinguished statesman and proud American.”
