McConnell Applauds Trump Administration Action To Help Prevent Foreign Interference in Elections
‘Because of sanctions against Russia and the removal of Russian officials from embassies and consulates within the U.S, this executive order establishes a declaratory policy that further Russian interference in our elections will not be ignored. More must be done to combat Russian aggression at all levels of our foreign policy, but this is a positive step in recognizing Russian tactics and in protecting our sovereignty, and I applaud the administration for its efforts.’
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following statement regarding the President Trump’s executive order to sanction countries that meddle in U.S. elections:
“Russian malign behavior against the United States and other democracies will not cease until President Putin and his regime suffer unacceptable consequences for Russian aggression. Russian interference in our 2016 elections represented a failure of foreign policy. Following Russian cyber-attacks, the invasion of Crimea, interference in Ukraine, and espionage against the United States, President Putin clearly felt confident that his government would not pay an unacceptable price for even more malign activities.
“That is changing under the Trump Administration. Because of sanctions against Russia and the removal of Russian officials from embassies and consulates within the U.S, this executive order establishes a declaratory policy that further Russian interference in our elections will not be ignored. More must be done to combat Russian aggression at all levels of our foreign policy, but this is a positive step in recognizing Russian tactics and in protecting our sovereignty, and I applaud the administration for its efforts.”
