Leader McConnell Meets with General Joseph Aoun
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following statement after meeting with General Joseph Aoun, Chief of Defense of the Lebanese Armed Forces:
“I was glad to welcome General Aoun to the Capitol yesterday to discuss ongoing security cooperation efforts.
“Since the end of the Syrian occupation in 2005, the Lebanese Armed Forces have steadily worked to become a professional and reliable partner in counterterrorism. Today, as Lebanon faces growing economic, political, and security challenges, I especially appreciate the Defense Department’s close partnership with the LAF.
“This partnership is important to our shared interest in countering those who promote sectarianism, violence, and terror in an important region.
“I also expressed to General Aoun my expectation that the LAF will remain firmly on the side of Lebanon’s people as it seeks to provide security and secure Lebanon’s sovereignty, consistent with UN Security Council resolutions 1559 and 1701.”
