ICYMI: McConnell on The Guy Benson Show and The Story

WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) joined Guy Benson on Fox News Radio’s ‘The Guy Benson Show’ and Martha MacCallum on Fox News’ ‘The Story’ this afternoon. See below for highlights or click here and here for the full interviews.

On the State of the Union:

“I think a good way to start is to talk about what the President’s job is tonight. I just looked at a poll today, you may well have referred to it, that said only 13% of Americans thought the state of the union was strong. 13%. They’re reacting obviously to open borders, rampant crime, inflation through the roof and the balloon.

“A whole week surveying all of America before a decision to shoot it down reminds me of the tentative nature of their involvement in Ukraine, which I largely support. Frankly my biggest criticism of the President on Ukraine is they don’t seem to do things fast enough. So, that’s the challenge the President has before him in trying to convince the American people of something they do not think, which is that the state of the union is strong.”

On the Chinese Spy Balloon:

“Regardless of whether we knew about it in the past, let's just focus on what did happen last week. It’s hard to explain why you'd let this balloon beginning in the Aleutian Islands, lots of open space, not many people below, Alaska, Canada, and wait until it gets to the Atlantic Ocean — after surveying all of American territory — to shoot it down. I mean, we have lots of questions to ask. Not only why did you not know this is happened in the past, but why did you deal with this the way you did?

[…]

“This is the kind of weak reaction coupled with things like withdrawing from Afghanistan, that haphazard way we did that in 2021, that leaves the American people with the impression that the country is not doing well. Raging crime, open borders, inflation going through the roof.”

On the Debt Ceiling:

“Well [Democrats] are claiming the wrong precedent, I’ll tell you that. And I think [Speaker McCarthy] is trying to do the right thing and I support him. The reason he needs to take the lead is because they’re in the majority and I think he’s doing the right thing. Hopefully the President will enter into some kind of reform on spending that makes a difference.”
